The Vessel at Hudson Yards in New York City is located at the start of the High Line & Hudson River trek, on Urban Trekking New York.

Open to the public in March 2019, it is already considered the Eiffel Tower of New York. It is made of interconnected stairs on 16 floors, and its platforms overlook the skyscrapers that have also recently emerged in this place. Its particular shape has also made it compared to a M. C. Escher drawing.

To visit it, it's free, but you have to reserve your place in advance.

Last but not  least, its name is temporary. It's the public that will decide its final name by going to a site created for this purpose, so if you have some ideas...

Une histoire charmante & une grande nouvelle - A charming story & a great news | dialogue | Faucon & Oie - Hawk & Goose

Image
(texte en français ci-dessous)

A charming story & a great news is the last dialogue between Hawk and Goose in "A Singular Domain".

It talks about a generous policeman, an upcoming wedding and a radio station. The events are somewhat linked and you will know more about them by going to read what they say, and all the other dialogues in the story!
------------------------------------

Image
(texte en français ci-dessous)

At Beacon Hill Art Walk, I show only my woodcuts and linocuts; the event always happens on a Sunday afternoon in June; the owners of the private alleys of this historic Boston neighborhood open their doors to exhibitors and the public. The weather is usually nice.

The first year I did it, I got the 3rd place award; in 2015, I got the 2nd place and this year, the 1st. Have I improved or has the competition narrowed? Judge by yourself by going to see my work since 2009 and before on LecomteDominique.com

As for Beacon Hill, it can be visited all year round following the self-guided Beacon Hill trek. Only the alleys will be closed but the neighborhood remains superb.

The Grand, Boston night club, Seaport District | DJ set 06/03/19 | Frank Walker & Felix Cartal

Image
(texte en français ci-dessous)
The Grand is the newest addition to Boston nightclubs. Located in the Seaport District, opened a little over a year ago, it hosts the greatest specialists in international electro dance.

Monday, June 6, it was the turn of Frank Walker and Felix Cartal to be at the mixer, each with his own energy and sound.

The sound system is impressive, loud but clear; the light shows are the most elaborate of Boston; the colorful visuals projected on two adjacent walls still transform the atmosphere.

If you especially want to dance and see your favorite DJs, you will probably regret that the dance floor is small and that most of the space is composed of VIP tables. This makes the Grand a chic club where you show off and that's what it claims to be. T

To find it, follow the Fort Point and Seaport trek; The Grand is not far from the new chapel of Notre-Dame du Bon Voyage where there too, it is advisable to dress properly, although in another style!

The ferry Charlestown Navy Yards - Boston Aquarium is one option to end the Charlestown self-guided trek

It's a 10-minute mini-cruise that brings you in front of the North End, then into the heart of the city.

There are even seats on the outer deck, facing the city!

Otherwise, you take the Charlestown Bridge back and you arrive next to North Station. It's about one extra mile walk.

The Longwood & Fenway trek - Le trek de Longwood & Fenway | Fenway Park, Boston

Image
(texte en français ci-dessous)

The Longwood & Fenway trek passes through Fenway Park and if you have never been to this place, it's worth the trip even if you do not like baseball. Fenway Park is the oldest baseball stadium in the US, where the Red Sox have been training since 1912. Who, from the Red Sox or the stadium, is the best known, hard to say?! Located almost in the city center, Fenway Park is also one of the smallest stadium of the MLB. It's classified as a Historical Landmark since 2012. Around, in the adjacent streets, the animation is constant and goes crazy during games. If you do not want to buy a ticket to visit the place, a bar offers a view of the lawn in exchange for a drink.

Before the concert - Avant le concert | Jordan Hall | New England Conservatory - Conservatoire de la Nouvelle-Angleterre | Boston

Image
(texte en français ci-dessous)

Before the concert at Jordan Hall, at the New England Conservatory in Boston, there is always this waiting time before the musicians arrive. The room fills up little by little, each one finds its place, the noise of the voices amplifies as the hour approaches. Then an announcement, the light goes down, they arrive. After the applause, the magic can begin. That night, it was the Philharmonix, a group of six musicians from the philharmonic orchestras of Vienna and Berlin, known for their good mood and mix of classical music, folk, pop, jazz and Latin. Jordan Hall is a superb room classified as a historical monument. Its acoustics are renowned and its classical music concerts are often more experimental than those of the Boston Symphony next door. Jordan Hall is also at the beginning of the South End trek. The students of the conservatory often repeat during the day and those of the entrance will probably let you go inside if you ask them to see the Hall.…

Chapel - chapelle | MIT, Cambridge | architect(e) Eero Saartinen | Boston +

Image
(texte en français ci-dessous)

The MIT chapel in Cambridge, designed by architect Eero Saarinen, is a good example of his neo-futuristic style. From the outside, a brick cylinder; around the cylinder, moats to make the place an island of serenity; hidden windows that allow the sun's reflections to wavy on the interior walls; a metallic structure designed by Harry Bertoia that captures the light from above. If you are following the Cambridge / MIT trek, the chapel is on your way and worth a detour. Eero Saarinen is known for the ark he created in St Louis, the tulip chair and, just in front of the chapel, the Kresge auditorium and its light metal structure resting on only 3 points. You will also see it on your way.

New York State Pavilion | Flushing Meadows Corona Park | Queens | New York City

Image
(texte en français ci-dessous)

The New York State Pavilion in Flushing Meadows Park, New York City, it's the end of the movie Men in Black 1, when the towers, in fact spaceships, fly away (if I remember correctly). It's also what remains of the 1964-65 World Fair; next to it, the Unisphere which, in the movie, stands out from its base and rolls to try to crush the heroes. All these places and the new Chinatown in Flushing will be explored in more detail in the upcoming Flushing Meadow Corona trek, soon on Urban Trekking New York. In the meantime, you can already use the 15 self-guided tours already available on the site if you want to visit New York City on foot, on and off the beaten track.

Image
(texte en français ci-dessous)

"North Head Harbour" is a 4x6" woodcut hand colored with pencils; its 1st edition was mainly blue and hand colored with watercolor but I changed this one to reflect some of the lights at sunrise.

North Head is the name of one of the villages on Grand Manan Island, an island in the Bay of Fundy. The print is a very partial representation of its lively and colorful harbor (spelled "harbour" in Canadian English!).

To see more prints about this island, go to LecomteDominique.com/gmprints.html

"North Head Harbour" est une xylogravure colorée à la main avec des crayons de couleur; sa 1ère édition était colorée principalement en bleu avec de l'aquarelle mais j'ai changé celle-ci pour représenter une partie des couleurs du soleil levant.

Dialogue 52 | Heron changes his plans - Héron change ses plans | A Singular Domain - Les Espaces Discrets

Image
(texte en français ci-dessous)

The dialogue 52, "Heron changes his plans", is one of the last dialogues published in "A Singular Domain". As Héron and Bâton notice when they meet, things suddenly change quickly around the ponds and once again, it is no different from what is happening elsewhere in the world. This time, Heron tells Stick that Heronnee cannot come as he had hoped and that, as a consequence, he is the one that is going to leave. Stick invites him to his marriage with Wand. To find this dialogue and all the others of the story, go to LecomteDominique.com/LesEspacesDiscrets/index.php/en/heron-changes-plans/

The Charlestown Bells - Les cloches de Charlestown | musical sculpture - sculpture musicale | Paul Matisse | Boston

Image
(texte en français ci-dessous)
The Charlestown bells, a musical sculpture by Paul Matisse, are between the Charlestown bridge and the Zachim bridge. To go there, follow the Charlestown trek starting from North Station in Boston.
The 1st edition of the trek was telling you to go to the Charlestown bridge; the April 2019 revised edition brings you to these bells and over some locks along a pedestrian walkway. Much better than being on the bridge with all the traffic and, right now, the construction.
The last part of the trek is new too. It suggests an extra one mile walk along the Harborwalk and in a part of the old Navy Yard that has been open to renovation when the Yard closed.
If you are wondering who this Matisse is, yes he's related to Henry Matisse. He is his grandson, and he  lives in Massachusetts.

Signs of piety - signes de piété | Battery Street - rue Battery | North End, Boston

Image
(texte en français ci-dessous)
Signs of piety on Battery St., in the North End in Boston, remind us that many people in the neighborhood are catholic and take their religion very seriously!
When you take the North End trek and come to the end of Battery St. just before Hanover St., here's what you can see on your right. On your left, another display, yet less visible.
At first, the North End trek was taking Commercial St. at this part of the tour; the April 2019 revised edition brings you to smaller and more typical streets of this area, like this street, with other  discoveries on your way.

The Gropius House & Museum - La maison musée de Gropius | Bauhaus | architecture | Lincoln, MA

Image
(Texte en français ci-dessous)

The Gropius House & Museum is for you if you like the minimalist architecture of the Bauhaus. Gropius, the master of the movement, has long taught at Harvard University after fleeing Nazi Germany. The house he had built in Lincoln, on land donated by one of his admirers, is now a museum run by Historic New England. His use of innovative materials (chrome, glass blocks, acoustic coatings ...) combined with the traditional elements of New England architecture have revolutionized the way buildings were made at the time and are now found in many contemporary buildings. Even his garden is a model of efficiency and minimalism. You'll have to take a guided tour to visit this place; this will allow you to ask questions about Gropius, his family, his house, the Bauhaus and the furniture designed especially for him by Breuer, another leader of the movement. You'll see that the guides are very competent.Obviously, this place is not on Urban Trekking Bost…

The South Boston Castle Island trek - Le trek de South Boston castle Island | self guided - auto-guidé

Image
(texte en français ci-dessous)

The South Boston Castle Island trek is the only Urban Trekking Boston trek that is not accessible by the T. unless you are ready to walk 2.5 miles before reaching it. So why take a car to do it?
To see overflowing planes landing a little further at Logan airport. To see cargo ships arriving at the Boston Harbor. To see the bustling Boston Bay and the cormorants perched on the traffic lights geared to the boats. To visit a fort dating, at first, of the revolutionary period of the USA (but not always open so inquire before). To see people walking, jogging, sunbathing, chatting. To queue at a fast food stall serving fried seafood platters. To feel you are in the open sea, yet close to the city. It's a little off the beaten path but surprising, and if the weather is nice, you 'll also be able to enjoy the beaches of the area.

J.F. Kennedy Library & Museum - Bibliothèque et musée J.F. Kennedy | Columbia Point | Dorchester | Boston

Image
(texte en français ci-dessous)

The J. F. Kennedy Library and Museum is located at Columbia Point in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood; designed in 1979 by I.M. Pei, its architecture is magnificent whatever the season. both outside and inside. I.M. Pei designed three buildings in Boston including the Hancock Tower, and four on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus in Cambridge where he studied architecture. It is said that for each, he was never completely satisfied with the result and sometimes thought not to recognize the finished product. As for the J. F. Kennedy library and museum, it had to be built with more noble materials than glass and cement, but budget problems decided otherwise. As it is located on the old dump of the city, at a given moment emanations of methane ignited spontaneously during the works. Today, however, the place is safe, accessible on foot from Carson Beach following the Harborwalk. It is a very pleasant and very well designed walk along the …

New York & New England prints - Gravures de la Nelle Angleterre & New York

Image
(texte en français ci-dessous)

"Cityscape, New York, NY" is one of 13 prints I created since 1994 to share my impressions of New England and New York City.

They were in different places before, but I decided to put them together in relation to Urban Trekking Boston and Urban Trekking New York, with links from these site to them.

I plan to create more prints for this page but right now, and even though it was on my to-do list this winter, I didn't find time to even think about the kind of images I'd like to do. I spent a day on it, to be exact, but I wasn't pleased with what I did!

It means you'll have to keep going on a regular basis to the New England & NYC prints page to see if I've finally done something new!  To be continued, so...

A John can hide another one - Un John peut en cacher un autre | DJ John Debo & John Digweed, 03-29-2019, Bijou, Boston

Image
(texte en français ci-dessous)

First it was John Debo, a long time Bostonian DJ now based in Orlando; then the master and legend John Digweed from England.

The first warmed up nicely a packed room with his unique blend of modular tech; the second brought to Bijou his flawless set of tech house that gained him a 1st place on the annual DJ mag top 100 a few years ago; all for an electrifying night of dance.

Bijou is in the Theater District, not far from Chinatown and on Stuart Street. It can accommodate about 650 people in what was The Bijou Theater in 1882. It's now a chic and futuristic nightclub with super sound and amazing lightning.

If you take the Chinatown, Downtown and Financial District trek , turn left instead of right when you reach Washington St; it will lead you to Stuart St. and Bijou will be somewhere further on your right.

The giant squirrel and the bird - L'écureuil géant et l'oiseau | Okuda San Miguel | Seaport Boulevard, South Boston

Image
(texte en français ci-dessous)
The giant squirrel and the bird by Okuda San Miguel is one of 7 sculpture of the public art project Air, Sea, Land. They are all on the median lane of the Seaport Boulevard in South Boston, all colorful and all by this artist.
This area was mainly parking lots and empty industrial buildings for years. Now, it is the trendiest part of Boston, with shops, restaurants, walking paths, and futuristic architecture.
To explore it, follow the Fort Point and Seaport trek, a free self-guided tour revised in March 2019 to keep up with the evolution of the neighborhood. It will lead you to the Institute of Contemporary Art and the Children Museum. Along the Harborwalk, you'll have superb views of the harbor and the Financial District.

No fishing - Pêche interdite | Dorchester Bay, Boston, MA

Image
(texte en français ci-dessous)

Of course, one understands the message, but it's still funny, isn't it? Or am I the only one laughing?

Take the Dorchester shores trek and you'll find this sign just when you have reached the 3 museums and go and see behind the JFK one.

And instead of trying to fish just before the sign to respect its injunction, use the places along the way and you'll be able to access the sea!

---------------------

Image
(texte en français ci-dessous)

Most of my larger prints are now on Images, Voyages, Impressions 1!
"A l'orée du bois", is a hand colored linocut I made in 2000, and re-printed in 2011.For the 2nd edition, I kept the same colors but less of them, and I cut the block on the left side to make it a 6x16"image instead of the 6x16.5" it was before.I wanted this print to look like some of the cave painting you see in the South West of France.
"Le temps des amours IV" is also a linocut and also a second edition but this time, I didn't change anything except the paper!I created the 1st edition in 1987, and it was part of a series of four 12.5x13" linocuts with four different pairs of animals in different stages of courtship (you can see all of them on the 1984-1990 prints page). The paper was different because I had bought it in France in a factory not far from where I was living.I showed them a little then moved abroad. It's only about 20 years ago…

Le Corbusier at Harvard University | the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts

Image
Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts

(texte en français ci-dessous)

Situated next to the Harvard Art Museum in Cambridge, the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts is often ignored.

At first indeed, it's only a somewhat ugly concrete brutalist structure in the middle of all these very classical New England buildings you have seen. It's only when you look at it more closely that you see it's quite an interesting work of art in its own way.

Enter it to visit its gallery, and you'll have a better view of what Le Corbusier had in mind when he draw the plans of this place. If you can tour it with a guide, it will be even better.

On top of that, it's just a short detour when you follow the just revised (March 2019) Cambridge/Harvard University trek, and the gallery is free to visit. It would be a shame to go besides it without seeing it.

Waiting for - en attendant | Marie Davidson | The Middlesex Lounge | 02/28/ 2019

Image
Set-up - Installation
(texte en français ci-dessous)
There is a kind of mystery inherent in these machines that flash and suddenly come to life under the fingers of a DJ, then plunge a room into an uninterrupted dance frenzy.

On February 28 at the Middlesex Lounge in Cambridge, it was Marie Davidson's turn to officiate on these keyboards that are the basis of her personal signature. Based in Montreal then Berlin, her concerts mix futuristic black sounds and her own voice.

If you take the Cambridge / MIT trek, the Middlesex Louge is a little past the MIT museum on Mass Ave. Open Thursday to Sunday from 7pm to 2am, it's first a bar with a modern and minimalist decor that turns into a club at 9pm and is at the forefront of electronic music, at least Thursday evenings, with three DJ in residence and a guest DJ and headliner.
